Honoring the Legacy of Mary Nutter
Mary Nutter was a pioneer, coach, mentor, and advocate for fastpitch softball. Her passion for the game, belief in education, and commitment to serving others continue to shape the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic and the scholarships awarded in her name.
Mary Nutter grew up in Manton, Michigan, before Title IX was enacted. Her first opportunity to play softball came at the age of 18, when she tried out for the Lansing Laurels. She played both amateur and professional softball until 1976 and was a two-time ASA First Team All-American.
After her playing days, Mary became a successful college softball coach at Pittsburg State University. In 1987, she founded her own business, conducting softball coaches’ clinics across the United States—bringing together many of the sport’s most successful coaches and athletes.
Mary was a tireless ambassador for fastpitch softball, dedicating her life to education, mentorship, and the growth of the game.
Life Beyond The Field
Beyond softball, Mary lived life fully. She was a devoted Spartan, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University. She loved cooking for others, gardening, traveling with friends, volunteering, and helping coach local high school softball teams.
Mary had a rare ability to bring people together and bring out the best in everyone around her.
Mary’s Legacy
The Mary Nutter Memorial Fund was established to honor Mary’s legacy of helping others and to continue her lifelong commitment to education and mentorship. Through this fund, scholarships are awarded to young women pursuing a college education—reflecting Mary’s deep belief that education provides the foundation for reaching one’s full potential.
Mary was a lifelong teacher and mentor who dedicated her life to empowering others. Each summer, a minimum of one $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a young woman participating in the NSC Recruiting Tournament. Presenting this scholarship has become one of the most meaningful highlights of the tournament weekend.
Through the continued generosity of supporters, this scholarship program helps young women take important steps toward achieving their academic goals and ensures that Mary’s passion for learning, service, and leadership continues to make a lasting impact.
Mary would be humbled by this support and proud to know that her legacy continues to open doors and create opportunities for future generations.
